Six athletes from the Calgary country are settling backmost location aft the Special Olympics World Winter Games successful Turin, Italy earlier this period — wherever they won a combined 10 medals.

That includes 3 gold, 1 metallic and six bronze medals.

The six peculiar Olympians were among 90 athletes representing Team Canada successful alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, fig skating, velocity skating and snowshoeing astatine the Games.

Cross state skier Sarah McCarthy, 41, was 1 of 3 section athletes who came location with a golden medal. She won golden successful the 4x1K relay contention with teammates Cory Beardy, John O'Neill and Marley Gayler.

19-year-old alpine skier Maddie Cyr came location from her archetypal travel overseas donning 3 ribbons — 4th spot successful slalom, sixth spot successful elephantine slalom and sixth spot successful super-G.

Jodi Flanagan with the Special Olympics Team Canada ngo said the athletes worked highly hard for their achievements — from regular grooming sessions to moving with intelligence show coaches.

She said the medals are great, but their wins spell beyond that.

"So overmuch of it was, however are they feeling? How are they succeeding successful travelling to different country? How are they succeeding being distant from their families and from their accustomed routines for this magnitude of time?" 

The different athletes from the Calgary country who competed successful the World Winter Games are Susan Miko, Elouise Stewart, Jennifer Riddell and Brett Garth.

Altogether, Special Olympics Team Canada brought location 116 medals — 39 gold, 35 metallic and 42 bronze.
